The Grasshopper and the Ants

A grasshopper sat on an ear of wheat, basking in the summer sun and singing a merry tune. He watched as the ants hurried by, carrying food to their winter storehouses. “Why do you ants work so hard? Stop and play. Learn to enjoy life!” the grasshopper told them.

But the ants continued their endless march to and from the storehouses. Poor, foolish ants, thought the grasshopper.

As summer ended, the days grew colder. One day, winter came and covered the earth in a white blanket of snow. The grasshopper was very cold and very hungry. He could not find food because the snow covered everything. As he shivered from leafless branch to leafless branch, he began to understand that the ants had not been so foolish after all. The ants were warm in their little homes where they had plenty to eat. They had been wise to store food for the winter.

The ants watched the grasshopper looking for food. Poor, foolish grasshopper, they thought.

And if it had not been for the kind and generous ants who shared their food, the grasshopper would have starved to death that winter.
