Fiona Firefly
(A Skit)
by Sandra Harris

This is a three-person skit or puppet show that’s a continuation of the one in the Expert Elephant lesson. For props, use trunks from the craft project made in the previous lesson.

Narrator: Hello again! Some of you might remember the two elephant friends we met last week, Eddie and Elmer. We left Eddie showering himself in the lake, cool and clean, but missing his friend Elmer. Poor Elmer had taken the wrong road. Let’s find out what happened to Elmer, the lost elephant. Why, here he comes now! Shhhh.

Elmer: (groaning and whining) Oh, I’m so hot…so tired…so thirsty…. Oh, it’s been four long days, long, long, l-o-n-g days. Where is that lake? I just can’t find it. Oh, I’ll never find it. It’s getting dark and I can’t see anything. Oh, why did I come this way? Why, why, why? (he collapses on the ground) Guess I’ll just lie here and wait to die. (faints or sleeps)

[Enter Fiona Firefly, fluttering around and blinking a flashlight, and humming. She comes upon Elmer and stops ubruptly.]

Fiona: Oh, my! What’s this?

Elmer: (moans and groans a little, but still asleep)

Fiona: Oh, it’s alive! Maybe I can shine some light on it and see what it is. (she adjusts light, still blinking) Oh! It’s an elephant kid! What’s he doing so far from home? I saw the others move into their campground yesterday. Poor thing! He must be pretty tired and scared. Maybe I can help him. First, I’ll have to wake him up. (she blinks her light in Elmer’s face)

Elmer: (groans and moans; starts to blink his eyes) Ohhh, what’s going on?

Fiona: Ahh, he’s starting to come to. (more loudly) Come on there, wake up! Wake up, boy! You can do it!

Elmer: (sits up, rubs eyes) Huh?

Fiona: There now, that’s better! My name is Fiona.

Elmer: Uh, hi. I’m Elmer.

Fiona Hi, Elmer! I’m glad to meet you.

Elmer: Excuse me, but what are you?

Fiona: I’m a firefly.

Elmer: Oh. Why are you called a firefly?

Fiona: Because I can start a little fire in my tail. See. (she blinks her light)

Elmer: Wow! That’s really neat!

Fiona: Say Elmer, you seem to be lost.

Elmer: Yeah, I guess I am.

Fiona: How did you get here?

Elmer: Wel, I, uh, I tried to take a shortcut to the new camp. I took a road that looked easier and faster.

Fiona: Oh, Elmer, my friend. There’s only one right path to that campground, unless you can fly. Your family and friends stayed on the right path. They got to the camp yesterday.

Elmer: Oh, boo-hoo-hoo! I wish I were with them. I’ll never find my way back.

Fiona: I can help you. Come on, we can start right now.

Elmer: But it’s dark! I can’t see where to go.

Fiona: That’s okay. I’ll show you the way. Remember my tail? Just follow my light! See?! (she blinks light)

Elmer: Hey, wow! Let’s go before that hot sun gets up! [Exit Fiona, blinking her light, with Elmer following. End skit here or use the following as a lead into discussion/teaching time.]

Narrator: So off they went, with Elmer following the little light that Fiona carried with her. They had to go back the way Elmer had come to get back on the right path. It took several more days of walking, but with Fiona’s light they could travel at night, too. At last, Elmer made it to the campground where he had many more adventures with his friend Eddie. But Elmer would never forget his little friend, Fiona, who guided him home.
