Iguana, Iguana, You Go Too Slow!
by Sandra Harris

Note: I’m sorry I can’t share the illustrations with you, but this gives your children the opportunity to draw their own illustrations for this story. I’ve used a slash to indicate where I made the page breaks, but your children may have their own ideas for this!

Iguana is scared. Iguana is frightened.

He can hear hunters in the jungle. They are very near. /

Poor Iguana! They caught his cousin. They caught his aunt.

They’re catching his sister! What’s Iguana going to do? /

Iguana, Iguana, you go too slow!

If you run toward the river, they’ll catch you for sure!

What should Iguana do? /

He could hide in the green leaves. They’ll never see him there.

Oh-oh, Iguana! They see your tail!

Iguana sees the hunters.

They move so fast. Iguana moves so slow.

Oh, what’s he going to do? /

Iguana sees a tree close by. He climbs it fast as he can.

Out on a limb, he crawls so slow, high above the river below.

Surely he’s safe now. /

Oh-oh, Iguana! Look behind you!

Hunter can climb trees, too!

Oh, my! What’s Iguana to do? /

Iguana can’t go forward. Iguana doesn’t want to go backward.

Iguana can’t go up. Oh, it’s a long way down.

Iguana has two choices.

He can stay and get caught, or he can jump and fall far, far down.

Gulp! What’s Iguana going to do?

Iguana looked back. Iguana looked down.

Iguana looked back -- /

Iguana jumped down.

Down, down, down, Iguana fell fast.

Will he survive? Will he last? /

Splash! Iguana hit the water.

Where are you, Iguana? I can’t see you.

That dive was impossible! You probably drowned. /

Wait, wait! I see you now! Far down the river.

Wow, Iguana! You’re not so slow –

In the water, you can really go!
