Jaguar, the Mean Cat of the Jungle

The jaguar is a beautiful animal to look at, but don’t ever get too close to one. He’s a mean cat, the meanest cat in the jungle.

The jaguar quietly sneaks around the jungle. Sometimes it stalks along the jungle floor. Sometimes it climbs in the trees. Sometimes it swims in the rivers. When it’s hungry, it pounces on some animal that will soon be a tasty lunch.

The jaguar might pounce

On an alligator swimming in the water,

Or a turtle hiding in the mud,

Or a deer grazing in the grass,

Or a dog basking in the sunshine,

Or a cow chewing her cud,

Or a rat sneaking through the vines,

Or a horse lingering in the shade,

Or a wild pig rooting in the dirt,

Or even a monkey chattering in a tree.

Yes, the jaguar is a mean animal. But God loves the jaguar. God made the jaguar. God gave him a beautiful fur coat. And God gave him an important job.

God knew it wouldn’t be good if there were too many alligators swimming in the rivers or too many wild pigs tearing up the ground. So he made the jaguar. And He made the jaguar mean so it could do its job. It isn’t easy to kill and eat an armadillo!

When God finished making everything, He said everything was good. Everything. We don’t have to like everything God made. But we can honor God by accepting that He had a reason for making things the way he did.

(Note: Younger children might enjoy acting out the various actions as the story is read aloud.)
