The Ladybug's Lesson
This skit can be performed by people or by using puppets. The ladybug is a non-speaking role and can be a prop rather than an actor. Scene: A garden. A ladybug is off to one side, partially hidden by plants. Three children are busy tending the garden, but one is giving orders and criticizing the work of others. Laura: Amy, look at what you just did! Its not good enough. And Ben, what an awful job! Cant you do anything right? Youll have to do this over again. Amy, why arent you working? Amy: I cut my finger. [Grandpa enters at the side, unnoticed by anyone.] Laura: Let me see it. Hmm, its just a tiny cut. It isnt bad enough for you to stop working. Here, take this and rake leaves for awhile. Ben, why are you just sitting there? Get to work! Ben: Look here, Laura. Ive been here for three hours working hard, non-stop. I've had no rest, no food, not even a drink of water. It's hot and Im tired, were all tired. And you want us to keep working but you tell us were doing a rotten job. Well, if Im doing such a rotten job, then I think I should go home. Good-bye, Laura. I hope you find someone who can do it right. Im just not good enough. [Exit Ben.] Amy: Bens right. Im just getting in the way. And right now, I really dont like the way youre treating me. Bye, Laura. [Exit Amy.] Laura: (calling after them) Well, if thats the way you want to behave, then good-bye. Ill just do it myself and itll get done right! [Laura continues to work, grumbling the entire time about bad friends and having no one to help her and not being liked by anyone.] Laura: (singing) Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess Ill go eat worms. [Laura spies a ladybug.] Laura: Oh, what a beautiful ladybug! Hi, Ladybug! You sure are pretty. Everyone likes you, Ladybug. I wish people liked me. I dont have a friend in the world right now. Ladybug, will you be my friend? [Grandpa quietly approaches Laura.] Grandpa: Im glad to see you havent chased your last friend out of the garden. Laura: (startled) Oh, Grandpa, you surprised me! Is the ladybug really me friend? Grandpa: Sure she is. Shes every gardeners friend. Laura: Why? Grandpa: This little bug may be little, but shes a mighty big helper. She eats all the tiny bugs that harm the plants that we want to grow. Laura: Is that why everyone likes ladybugs? Grandpa: Thats one reason. But theres another reason. Laura: Tell me, Grandpa, tell me! Grandpa: Ladybugs dont sting or bite their friends the way you were doing earlier. Laura: Me? But Grandpa, I dont sting, and I didnt bite anyone. Honest. Grandpa: No, Laura, you dont sting like a bee, and you didnt bite anyone with your teeth, but the way you treated Amy and Ben was very hurtful. They were trying to be helpful but you didnt appreciate their work. That hurt them very, very much, just like getting stung. Laura: But they were doing some things wrong! Grandpa: Have you ever done something wrong? Laura: Well, yes. But they were hardly working. I had to do all the work! Grandpa: Laura, be honest: were you doing all of the work, or all of the bossing? Laura: I guess I was doing all of the bossing. Gee, I wish Amy and Ben would be my friends again. They really were good friends, werent they? Grandpa: Yes, Laura, very good friends. Laura: Grandpa, how can I be a good friend, like our ladybug friend? Grandpa: The best way, Laura, is to treat others the way the Bible says to. Laura: What does the Bible say about friends? Grandpa: It says a lot about friends so much that it would take me all day to tell you everything. So, Ill tell you of two very important things it says. First, it says to treat others the way you want them to treat you. Laura: You mean like if I want someone to share their toys with me then I should first be willing to share my toys with them. Grandpa: Right! Laura: Whats the second thing? Grandpa: The second one is to honor one another above yourselves. Laura: What does that mean? Grandpa: Basically, it means to treat others and think of others as being more important than yourself. Now, dont misunderstand me. To God, we are all very, very important and no one is more important than anyone else. But God wants us to treat others as if they are important or very special. He wants us to honor others. Laura: That sounds hard. How can I honor other people? Grandpa: Theres lots of ways. By being kind and thoughtful. By sharing. By letting others go first. By helping someone do a hard job or an icky job, or by doing a job for them. By saying please and thank you. By caring if they are hurt or sick or tired. By Laura: Grandpa, Grandpa! I have an idea! Can we have a party for Ben and Amy? Grandpa: What kind of a party? Laura: A Thank-You-for-Being-My-Friend Party! I want to honor them! Grandpa: What a wonderful idea! Lets go home and start planning it. [Exit Laura and Grandpa.] * |
