Nellie Nuthatch Saves
the Day This is a skit for three players or two puppets and a narrator (one person). The nuthatch and tree made for the craft project can be used for Nellie and the backdrop. Cut out a larger bird from black construction paper for Carolyn the Crow. Narrator: One day, while Nellie Nuthatch was sitting in a tree, Carolyn Crow flew in loaded with a large bag of something. Carolyn: Look what I found, Nellie! A whole bag of nuts! Im gonna have a feast today! Narrator: But as Carolyn opened the bag, some of the nuts fell from the bag and landed in a tiny nook between two branches far below. The spot was much too small for Carolyn to fly into with her big wings. Carolyn: Oh, boo-hoo, Ill never be able to get those nuts. Oh dear, Im so clumsy. Boo-hoo-hoo. Nellie: Hey, dont go carrying on like that. Its not the end of the world, you know. And anyway, I can get those nuts for you Carolyn: You can?! But how? That space is even too small for you to fly into. Nellie: Who said anything about flying? Ill just run down there, get the nuts and run back up. Simple as that. Carolyn: Run down? You must be crazy! Nellie: Nope. Im not crazy. If I couldnt do it, I wouldnt. Watch. Narrator: So Nellie ran down the tree, grabbed a few nuts and ran them back up to Carolyn. It took her a few trips, but before long the nuts were all back in the bag. Carolyn was so amazed her mouth opened like a big, black cave. At last, she closed it. Carolyn: Wow! What a neat trick! Thats like walking on your head. Wow, thats neat! Nellie: Yep, God really is neat! Carolyn: Say, Nellie, theres a lot of nuts here. Would you like to help me eat them? You can have half of them. Nellie: Thanks, Carolyn! I am a little hungry. Narrator: And so the two birds sat in the tree munching on their nuts and talking, until Carolyn came to a nut she just couldnt open. Carolyn: Oh, hard old nut! Id better throw it away before I break my jaw. Nellie: Here, let me give it a try. Carolyn: You? But youre smaller than I am. Youll break your jaw for sure. Nellie: I promise I wont hurt myself. Let me try. Carolyn: Well, okay, but dont hurt yourself, please? Narrator: Nellie took the nut, wedged it in a crack in the trees bark, and began hammering the nut with her straight, sharp beak. She soon had the shell chipped away. She gave the nut to Carolyn. Carolyn: Wow! A beak like a hammer and a pick ax. Thats pretty nifty! Nellie: Yep, God is pretty nifty. Narrator: The two birds continued to eat fo a while longer. Soon, they began to get full and they ate more slowly. At last, they stopped eating. Nellie: Ive had enough for now. Im going to store whats left of my nuts. Carolyn: Store yours if you want, Im just going to toss mine away and then take a nap. [yawn] Talk to you later, Nellie. [Exit Carolyn] Narrator: After Carolyn left, Nellie scurried around picking up all of the nuts she had tossed to the ground. She hid them in the trees nearby. Several months passed. The wind grew stronger and colder. Winter soon arrived and a storms sometimes blanketed the ground with snow. One winters day, Nellie and Carolyn sat in the tree talking. Carolyn: Brrr, its cold. Its been cold for a long time. And Im so hungry. I havent been able to find anything to eat for days. Nellie: I can get you some nuts. Would you like some? Carolyn: Id love some. Im famished! Narrator: So Nellie ran up and down the trees, gathering nuts and returning to Carolyn with them. Carolyn, who was indeed very hungry, quickly ate what was given to her. When at last her stomach had enough in it to stop complaining, Carolyn began to talk again. Carolyn: Say, where did you find all of these nuts? Nellie: Remember the nuts you found last September? Well, I hid the leftovers. I hid the ones you threw away, too. Carolyn: Wow, you are smart! Nellie: God is smart. Carolyn: Why do you keep saying that God is whatever I say you are? Nellie: Because God is the one who deserves the credit. Hes the one who created me. Carolyn: What do you mean? Nellie: Well, God gave me sharp claws and a short tail so that I can climb up and down trees. And God gave me a strong, sharp, straight beak so that I can wedge nuts in tight places and crack them. And God taught me to hide leftovers and save them until I need them. He also gave me a good memory so that I can remember where I hid the food. So you see, God is the wonderful one. He gave me my special abilities. Carolyn: I think I understand now. I wonder if God gave me any special abilities? Nellie: Sure He did! He gives everyone special abilities, but no two creatures have all of the same ones. Everyone has their own special, but different, abilities. Think about it. I come by later to hear what you thought about. Bye. Carolyn: Bye, Nellie. Narrator: Carolyn sat on a branch, scratched her head and began to think. As she thinks about her special abilities, why dont you think about yours. What special abilities has God given you? * |
