Cub's First Day Out
by Sandra Harris

Will the polar bear cub survive his first day outside his warm, cozy den?

This story works well as a felt or flannel board story. You will need felt cutouts for: mama polar bear, a polar bear cub, a sun, a fish, snow (strips of white felt will work), a frozen pond (a circle of light blue felt will work), an ocean (blue or blue green felt will work), and a cave/den (half circle of black, gray or brown felt will work).

“Spring is here,” Mama Polar Bear said one day. “Come on, Cub. It’s time for you to go outside and learn about the world.”

Cub followed his mama to the entrance of their cozy, warm den. “Brrrr, it feels cold out there, Mama. I might freeze.”

“Don’t worry,” Mama Polar Bear said. “You’re wearing a thick fur coat. You won’t get cold.”

Cub followed his mama outside into the sunshine. “Mama, the light is so bright. It might hurt my eyes.”

“Don’t worry,” Mama Polar Bear said. “You have shades over your eyes that will protect them from the sun’s bright glare. You won’t hurt your eyes.”

So Cub followed his mama to a frozen pond. “Mama, the ice looks slippery. I might fall and hurt myself.”

“Don’t worry,” Mama Polar Bear said. “You have special non-slip pads on your feet. You won’t slip and slide on the ice.”

So Cub followed his mama onto the frozen pond and then they ran to the ocean. Mama Polar Bear showed Cub how to catch fish. Soon, Cub caught a very large fish.

“Oh dear,” Mama Polar Bear said. “Do you think you can eat such a large fish?”

“Don’t worry,” Cub said. “I have a very hungry tummy. I can eat this large fish.”

And he did.
